A Streetcar Named DesireBy Tennessee Williams |
Produced: April, 1988 The director asked that this setting be built over the orchestra pit as close to the audience as possible, and he wanted a cave metaphor for the bedroom. Exterior action would not be in front of the set. These were challenges while serving other needs and ideas in the script with a certain degree of literalness. The background is a somewhat appropriate rented drop, dim or dark for most of the show. A ramp stretched across behind for street action which could be seen through the scrimmed walls of the house. The apartment also descended unrealistically from the front door to the bedroom for the "cave" effect, which was more enhanced with lighting focused and the background darkened. |
