An Enemy of the PeopleBy Henrik Ibsen |
  |
Produced: February, 1978 I had wanted to do an Ibsen, just to see if I could make it work. For scenery I pared away the 19th century stuff and tried to focus on the action and dialogue. I thought there was a compelling story and the environmental movement was beginning to get some traction as we struggled with gas shortages. The setting actually worked fairly well for the show. My conceit here was the wallpaper, a repeating large iron cross. It fed into my sense that the show was about conviction and how inconvenient it is. Crusaders can find life lonely and unhealthy.
